One of the biggest misconceptions about dressing well is that you have to spend a lot. Sure, investing in designer pieces is one of the best ways to instantly elevate any outfit, but dressing well is more than that. We all know her when we see her – a well-dressed woman will stand out among a crowd – she’s effortlessly pulled together yet every piece feels well thought out. There are a few tricks of the trade that easily take a look from feeling pulled off the rack to well-stylized. Keep scrolling for my tricks and the key secret to dressing well.

Layer On A Chic Coat

Ever wonder why fall and winter outfits are the best seasons for style? It all comes down to layering – which makes any outfit feel more put together. The best (and easiest) way to dress well in the winter months is to add a chic coat over whatever you’re wearing. Weather-permitting, a wool coat is my go-to when I want to up the chic factor. Grays and camels are the best colors because they go with everything.

Wear Understated Jewels

A lot of people miss this part of pulling together a look (myself included, at times). Putting on a number of understated jewels will instantly add that stylized feel to any outfit. I opt for understated gold or silver pieces for a modern touch. Even in the winter months, you can stack on bracelets over your sleeves, layer rings and add ear crawlers (my favorite).

Invest In A Great Handbag

Yes, this does come with a bigger price tag, but investing in a designer bag (or at least a quality leather bag) is one of the best wardrobe investments you can make. It will elevate the most basic and even the most affordable outfits. Plus it will last forever. Go with a neutral colored one that goes with everything.

Stick With Classic Pumps

When it comes to shoes, pumps and over-the-knee boots are the main styles that I’lll invest in. I own four pairs of this style of Christian Louboutins and they get more wear than any other style in my closet. I love patent leather or suede because they add texture to any outfit. When it comes to heel height, I believe the higher the better, but if comfort is more of a concern, these are my other designer go-to. You don’t have to invest in pumps though, there are so many great affordable options too like these and these.

Go With A Monochromatic Palette

This is my key secret when it comes to dressing well. Sticking with one color palette is the best way to make an outfit feel effortlessly pulled together. I love mixing textures and shades of a color in one outfit. I almost always do this trick when I’m styling neutrals (white, black, gray and camel) because they’re easier on the eye.
