As much as I love designer items, it feels a lot more effortless when you pair everyday, affordable pieces with them. I always strive to wear at least one affordable item in my daily outfits. You really don’t have to spend a lot to look amazing, but investing in quality, designer items for certain pieces is a great way to build a wardrobe that will last. My designer items always outlast more affordable fast fashion pieces so I don’t have to worry about them getting damaged as easily because they hold up so well. Especially when it comes to suede and leather – designer items make the most sense. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve gotten my suede & leather boots soaked in the snow, muddy in the summers or drenched by a spilled soda (thanks Phil…haha) and they come completely clean. Every time that happens, it just reaffirms my purchasing decision. Of course, I don’t buy everything designer so I thought I’d share the categories that I’ve felt like have made the most sense to splurge on and what I typically save on.

Where I Splurge…

Handbags

A designer bag will instantly make any outfit look more expensive. You can wear all Forever 21 and then carry a Gucci bag and no one thinks you’re wearing Forever 21. More importantly though, designer bags just last! I’ve never had to replace a designer bag because it broke. Of course they get dirty (a good shoe cobbler can clean them for you) and they will show signs of wear, but I kind of like them better that way. I like my pieces to feel lived in. I use my Louis Vuitton Neverfull daily. Even when I’m carrying a mini bag, I’ll often bring my LV tote too to carry all the extra stuff – which these days it’s mostly dog treats and water bowls. When we have kids, I’ll probably use it as a diaper bag too.

Shoes (Mainly Suede & Leather)

These over-the-knee boots are my go-to’s in the winter. They make every outfit look more chic and as I mentioned above, the suede will recover from anything. Phil recently knocked a soda over in the car and it literally poured into my leather Jimmy Choo booties like an empty cup. I was convinced they were ruined especially since it was Diet Coke and the insoles are beige, but nope you can’t even tell anything happened to them. Same thing happened to a pair of my Stuart Weitzman boots and they are totally fine! My suede nude Chloe wedges got covered in mud at a music festival last summer and we just threw them in a tub of soapy water and they came totally clean. Pretty sure every other pair of suede wedges would have been ruined! I will also always splurge on Louboutins – this pair is my favorite style. They are just the prettiest shoes out there. They were my first designer shoe splurge and I’ll never look back!

Outerwear

I’ll splurge on Burberry pieces all day long, but not every piece of designer outerwear. I’ve always believed a Burberry trench was one of those designer closet essentials so I finally bought one last year and it’s honestly my favorite jacket. For the winter, I got a Canada Goose this year and oh my gosh, it is worth the splurge especially if you live in a cold climate like I do.

Denim (also save here too)

With denim I go back and forth, but ultimately it’s all about fit. If you find a brand that looks good on you, the price tag is the last thing you worry about, right? My favorite premium brands are L’Agence, AG and Frame. They all fit me the best and last the longest so if I see a pair that I love in any of those brands, I’ll splurge.

Where I Save…

Tops

Under $100 tops are my favorite kind. I don’t keep many tops in my wardrobe from season-to-season mainly because I get bored pretty easily. With how petite I am, most tops don’t fit me properly either and I don’t want to pay to get every single top tailored. Instead I’ll just wear them a few times and move on. My under $100 brands are Free People, Endless Rose, J.O.A., Topshop and H&M.

Accessories

Mainly for hats and scarves, I prefer to buy affordable versions. I love Nordstrom, Asos, Free People and H&M for beanies, baseball hats and chunky scarves.

Casual Shoes (Sneakers & Booties)

Nike, adidas and Converse are my go-to affordable casual footwear brands. For booties, I always find great options by Marc Fisher, Steve Madden and Dolce Vita.

Denim (also splurge here too)

Some of my favorite affordable brands also make some of my favorite pairs in my wardrobe – Asos, Levi’s and Blank Denim are my faves.
