How To Make This Valentine’s Day The Best Yet.

mia mia mine with husband phil thompson for valentine's day

I’ll admit I wasn’t always a fan of Valentine’s Day. It wasn’t until I met Phil that I started to see what a fun holiday it is. He’s definitely a romantic at heart so he’s always gone out of his way to make it special. Today I thought I’d share some of the most thoughtful things he’s done for me over the 11 years we’ve been together. Even if you don’t have a significant other, some of these are totally worth doing for yourself or family/friends too.

A Room Full of Roses

Nothing says Valentine’s Day like a bouquet of roses or 20 bouquets…Phil’s not one for grand gestures or anything! Ok, it actually sounds more over the top than it is. He let me in on his little secret to where he buys roses in bulk (check out this site). Every year for the past couple of years, he’s been surprising me with them and every time I think he should do this more often! Haha. They are actually a great idea if you want to give bouquets to your family and friends too. Their prices go up as we get closer to Valentine’s Day, but they last for a week or two depending on how well you take care of them. Another bonus tip: we picked up vases from the dollar store to display them. Thanks to my sister for letting us know that little secret as we were struggling to find enough vases in the same size.

Bouquets of Balloons

You may have seen these bouquets of heart balloons on my Instagram account (here). I bought them for Phil’s birthday last week, but I totally stole the idea from him. He’s been buying them for me for the past few Valentine’s Days and you wouldn’t believe how affordable they are – just $12 for a dozen from Party City. They run a Valentine’s Day special every year and it’s going on now.

A Romantic Dinner At Home

Phil’s a great cook so I’d actually prefer him to make a meal at home on Valentine’s Day vs. going out – if he feels up to it, of course. We’re both super indecisive when it comes to eating out so it’s always more relaxing to eat at home. Our go-to is typically a steak meal – he makes the best filet mignon. This is the recipe/technique he follows. Getting dressed up, adding candles and our favorite bottle of wine makes it extra special.

Roses That Last Until Next Year

Ok, so Phil hasn’t actually done this for me, but I did receive a box from Venus Et Fleur this year and I’m amazed at how well their roses hold up. They are pricey, but they’re gorgeous, smell amazing and last for over a year. I’ve had mine for about six months and they look just as good as when I received them. Shop them here.

A Song Written For Me

When I was little, the only thing I ever wanted in a husband was for him to be able to play or sing me a song. Now you know what attracted me to Phil (among a lot of other things, of course). Phil can play any song by ear so he often plays cover songs. It was extra special when he wrote me this song (without lyrics originally) – fun fact: we only broke up once – in our first year of dating, but the song is more reflective of the year that we did long distance. He also let me be in one of his music videos (see it here).

xo, Maria
