How I Style A Winter Outfit

When it comes to pulling together an outfit together, I have to say winter is the toughest season to do so. The weather is always a factor so I don’t really plan out my outfits. I’ve never really been the type of person that can plan out my outfits in advance. I used to try to do so, but I felt so uninspired and when I’ve worn outfits that were entirely preplanned, I’d feel more like the outfit was wearing me versus me wearing it. Instead I like to choose my outfits depending on my mood and the weather that day. In the winter, I’m obviously limited to layers and footwear that can get wet!

I almost always start with my outerwear and shoes and work towards the inner layers. In the warmer months I definitely don’t start planning my outfit that way, but since my jacket is the most visible piece of clothing in the winter – I start with that. My closet is busting at the seams with winter outerwear – well all the closets in our house are actually. Winter jackets take up a lot of space! They’re an absolute necessity though. I love the days that I can get by with lighter-weight coats and jackets because it’s always easier to make them look chic versus a bulky winter jacket.

Once I determine how heavy of a jacket I need, I move on to footwear. I always ask myself “will my shoes get ruined?” Living in a snow covered state, the struggle is real. By now you probably know I have a real love for designer shoes (read more about why here) – which is great in the warmer months, but in the winter the snow and wet streets can really do a number on even the most durable footwear. I almost always opt for boots (either booties or over-the-knee versions) or patent leather pumps (these are my favorite and are super durable). Leather and suede are my go-to materials (I only wear suede if it’s designer though because it’s way more durable and can withstand getting wet) unless it’s really snowy and wet outside – then I’ll reach for my Sorel, Hunter or Timberland boots – those three are usually on rotation.

After I narrow down my jacket and shoes, I move to my favorite part – my outfit. Each week I have at least one new top that I’m dying to wear and I’ll work through my wardrobe to figure out what to wear underneath it or layer over it. Since I’m in distressed denim 90% of the time, I reach for my denim last. It usually depends on what type of footwear I’ve chosen to decide if I’m wearing ultra skinny jeans to tuck into boots or slightly looser versions to wear over my shoes.

xo, Maria
