One of the most common questions I get asked on Instagram is what self-tanner I use. For the last few years I was using spray tan machines at tanning salons (the VersaSpa was my favorite with clear Norvell solution), but in all honesty, it was such a chore going to the salon in the evenings – I usually went right before bed so that I didn’t smell like tanning solution all day. I finally decided to take matters into my own hands this past year and just buy a self-tanning machine for at-home use. I was always intimidated by the professional spray guns until I came across this tanning machine. I had to try it especially since it was by my favorite self-tanner brand. I’ve been using it now for the past year and love that it gives me the freedom to tan at home on my schedule and it’s more than paid for itself with how much I use it. I’ve timed myself and it takes about 7 minutes using this machine (including cleanup). Keep scrolling to read my weekly routine.
I spray tan 2-3 times a week. I’ve experimented with doing lighter applications every day for 3 days and then taking 3 days off or just spraying heavier applications every 2-3 days – which has worked best for me. I use this clear tanning solution which is the same solution I used at the tanning salon in the VersaSpa. I love that it’s clear so you don’t have to worry about staining your clothes or sheets. The only downside is that you can’t see where you are spraying so you have to rely on feeling. Even still, I rarely have mistakes. It’s pretty easy to do right, you just have to make sure you apply enough coats and go slowly in a sweeping motion and I have Phil spray my back.
One of the best secrets I’ve learned for getting a great tan is to exfoliate first. I’m not talking about just using a scrub – I rely on body brushing to remove all those extra layers of tanner. I use this brush with this exfoliator 1-2x per week either before I shower or in the shower. It really makes a difference! I’m also obsessed with these face exfoliators which I use with water to get rid of any blotchiness (mistakes) on my face, neck and hands the day after I tan.
