How to Make Heavy Winter Layers Look Chic

The key to nailing a chic winter outfit is all about layering. However, this oftentimes feels like a conundrum as layering can result in unwanted bulk that looks frumpy rather than stylish. At the same time, you shouldn’t ever leave your home in paper-thin layers when it’s freezing outside. So today, I wanted to cover some of my tips on how to make heavy winter layers look chic. As effortless as layering seems, a few misplaced pieces can result in a stuffy and uncomfortable outfit – especially if you’re out running errands or going to work. This is where the smallest styling tweaks can make all the difference in the world. Here’s how to look cute in the winter, even if you’re bundled up from head to toe.
Start with fitted, lightweight layers
When temperatures are sub-zero outside, I prefer to start my outfit with a light base layer. I will typically rotate between a fitted turtleneck, a long-sleeve bodysuit, or a heat-tech tee. Starting with the thinnest layer possible allows you to control the bulkiness of your outfit – and highlight your feminine shape as you layer on chunky knits and cardigans.
Double up on jackets
Winter layers especially look chic when you can see different textures and silhouettes peeking through. I love seeing a leather jacket or blazer underneath a heavier wool piece – or a shorter piece under a longer one. It’s a great way to change up a traditional winter look and make use of all the jackets in your wardrobe.
Incorporate statement pieces
I’m sure you can already guess that coats and shoes are my weakness. I’m obsessed with collecting them because it’s likely that I spend more time in a coat rather than my actual clothes underneath. A coat also happens to be the most visible piece once you step outside. Fortunately, a statement coat or pair of shoes can immediately up the chic factor of a look, making them a worthy investment.
Try a monochromatic look
When it comes to pulling an outfit together, I have to say winter is the most difficult season to do so. However, a monochromatic look never fails to be a good solution. From winter whites to all black, there’s something undeniably sophisticated about a monochromatic outfit. This is where I like to mix new season purchases with older closet staples. The best part is, you probably don’t need to buy anything new to achieve this chic, polished ensemble!
Try a cinched waist
If you ever feel that your outfit is too bulky under all of your layers, throw on a belt to define your waist. I’ve been using this styling trick a ton this winter from belting a blazer to a more classic coat – and it always looks chic. This Gucci belt has been one of my best purchases in the past year and always looks great over outerwear.
