How To Stand Out On Instagram

As someone whose career is heavily influenced by this platform, I know how frustrating it can be if you’re just starting out. On top of the algorithm, the industry can often feel oversaturated and discouraging. One of the most popular questions I get from you guys relates to Instagram growth and how to stand out on Instagram. Of course there’s no perfect formula – and everyone’s experience is a little different. With that said, I thought I’d share a few of my social media hacks for how you can stand out from the crowd.

Produce Meaningful Content

The number one thing you can do stand out on Instagram is to produce meaningful content that is not only relevant to your followers but also to you. Believe it or not, passion and ingenuity can be easily detected through a post or a feed. You’ll attract a lot more people to your page by expressing your passions and staying true to yourself. Along with that, taking good quality photos and pairing it with thoughtful captions are key to growing an audience. This advice might sound cliche, but I can’t stress how crucial it is to be imaginative and creative with your personal style, photography concepts, and story telling. With so many bloggers doing the same thing, this is really your chance to think outside the box and offer something with a unique twist.

Have a Theme

Having a cohesive aesthetic is what will make people who stumble on your page actually want to follow you. A potential follower should know exactly what they can expect to see from you. It’s easy to see a beautiful feed and want to replicate it, but what works for one influencer may not work for you. That’s why it’s so important to experiment and see what your followers respond to. My theme focuses on fashion with an editorial flair. Others might focus on pastel colors, only photos shot from above, or beautiful views. Remember that your Instagram theme doesn’t have to be restrictive. Some bloggers have a lot of success changing their color schemes and themes every few months. (For more on how I found my Instagram aesthetic, you can read this post here.)

Cross Promote Your Instagram Content

Getting noticed on Instagram is often about visibility. Sometimes, you’re not growing simply because you’re not seen. One of the ways I try to ensure greater exposure on my part is by cross promoting my content. All of my Instagram photos go on my blog – and also get pinned on Pinterest. I love Pinterest because posts live on forever and can continue to drive traffic to your site or Instagram.

Engage with New & Potential Followers

After you have gone out of your way to post an amazing photo with a relatable caption, you might receive some comments from followers and friends. Take the time out of your day to interact with these users by replying and commenting on their photos. It is such a simple gesture but it can really personalize social media interaction. On the other side, don’t be afraid to comment on other user’s posts that really resonate with you! Creating a circular economy of Instagram engagement is a great way to grow.

Instagram Story Interaction

With some of the newer algorithm updates, Instagram really caters to the user who is active in every aspect of the platform. So the next time you are tapping through your Instagram story feed, try reacting and replying to your friends’ stories. When it is time to post your own story, take advantage of some of the engagement stickers like the Poll or the Question option. One of the ways to do this are by having your followers vote on a particular look or a purchase you’re thinking about. This directly encourages your audience to interact and engage. Though this adds a human element and some personality to your content, it’s also helpful for the algorithm.

Use Hashtags

One of the easiest ways to get exposed to new potential followers is by using hashtags. Be strategic about which hashtags you’re using because you don’t want your content to get buried under thousands of other posts. However, you also don’t want to use a hashtag that no one is looking at. One of my tricks to gauging whether a hashtag is actively used is by looking at the date of the last or most recent post. Although hashtags can look spammy, they really work when it comes to exposure.

These are a few ways you can focus on boosting your engagement on Instagram in 2019. No matter what though, don’t let the pressure of Instagram get to you too much. Stressing about the numbers and statistics can expel all the fun out of the app. Instead, focus your energy on the quality of your posts and interaction with your followers. Keeping these things in mind are ways your feed can get noticed!

xo, Maria
