I typically invest in basics at the start every season that way I have a wardrobe filled with wearable pieces that can be mixed and matched. If you’ve been following me for a while, then you can probably guess that my must-have basics include the classic white shirt, distressed denim, and basics tees and tanks. I always make sure to have plenty of these in my closet. From there, it’s easier to sprinkle in statement pieces and accessories to elevate your look throughout the season. The great thing about basics is that you can find some really great quality pieces that are completely affordable. I’m usually able to find everything I need for under $100 from Nordstrom’s trend shop. Below, I’ve rounded up my top 10 basics that are ideal for building the perfect summer wardrobe.

1. Bodysuits

Some of my favorite basics that work year-round are tanks. I like to keep an assortment of them in neutral tones because they go with everything. Over the last few seasons, I’ve gravitated towards these silhouettes in bodysuit form. Nordstrom carries some of my favorite bodysuits from brands like Tiger Mist, Free People, and Topshop, which I’ve featured countless time on the blog. I always make sure to have a stock of them throughout the year since they make such great layering pieces.

2. Plain Tees

I love rotating through my favorite tees and tanks and dressing them up with statement accessories for a casual look that’s not overdone. I usually go for a slightly oversized fit in white or black for a more effortless, off-duty vibe. Details like a low cut neckline, cut-out details, or distressing add an edgy touch that makes a simple tee feel less basic.

3. White Button Down Shirt

A classic white shirt is a staple in my wardrobe year round. For summer, I love lightweight fabrications that are slightly sheer – like linen. You can always layer it over a lace bralette for an understated yet sexy vibe – or wear it unbuttoned for a more relaxed feel. I sometimes like to tie it at the waist with high-waisted bottoms.

4. Lace Cami

Lace camis are a weakness of mine. I love wearing them alone in the summer, and then layering them with cardigan when it’s colder for an easy, romantic look. I’m always on the hunt for the prettiest styles, but the one place I keep coming back to that always seems to have the best assortment is Nordstrom – and they’re super affordable too.

5. Cotton Shorts

Shorts are the quintessential summer staple. I love high-waisted styles because it helps elongate the body and creates a more flattering silhouette. I have been obsessing over paper bag and tie-waist details this year. They’re so comfy and make great vacation pieces.

6. Denim

I’m sure you guys know how much I love distressed denim. Whether it’s a perfect pair of jeans, shorts, or a denim jacket, I’m rarely ever caught without one or the other. In the summer, I swap my jeans for cut-offs. Distressed details are my favorite for an easy, casual feel. This season, I’m all about light to medium wash denim shorts with distressing and a raw hem. Some of the ones I wear most are from Levi’s, which Nordstrom has a full collection of.

7. Mini Skirts

I wasn’t always the biggest fan of skirts since it’s often hard to find a flattering fit for my petite frame, but I’ve been wearing them more lately. I find that minis are the best length for me because they don’t cut off my legs. Besides denim skirts, I’ve been loving those with ruffle details and slit cuts which are great for summer.

8. Blazer

While basics always feel great, they don’t alway look the most stylish. The easiest way to elevate them is with a lightweight jacket, such as a blazer. I’m a big believer that a great-fitting blazer is one of the best wardrobe investments ever. Fortunately, Nordstrom has so many great styles for less than $100 and they instantly take any outfit from boring to chic.

9. One Pieces

My summer wardrobe wouldn’t be complete without easy one-pieces that can be toned down for the day but dressed up for the evening. Whether you’re into flirty rompers, bodycon dresses, or cool jumpsuits, they’re all perfect for looking effortlessly elegant.

10. Statement Accessories

Basics create the perfect backdrop for fun accessories. Summer is probably the only time I really experiment with shoe trends, and I’ve been eyeing everything embellished. Beaded, sparky heels are such a cool way to update your office outfit – or just to wear on the weekends. If you’re more of a shoe minimalist, then try tasseled statement earrings. The options are endless at Nordstrom.
