How to Simplify Your Wardrobe

It’s much less stressful knowing that when I go to my closet to get dressed each day, everything fits perfectly, can easily be mixed and matched, and looks good on. This makes getting dressed such a quick and efficient process. Paring back and building your ideal wardrobe doesn’t happen over night though. It takes a lot of planning and discipline to get to the final product. If you’re looking to simplify your wardrobe for an easier, and perhaps more stylish, lifestyle, I’m sharing my key takeaways on creating a timeless collection.

Invest In Wardrobe Basics

I always recommend investing in the pieces that make good foundations for a variety of outfits. Rather than spend money on fast fashion quality goods that will more than likely need replacing a year from now, invest a little more on superior quality. Some of those wardrobe basics are solid colored tees, camisoles, flattering denim, and blazers. These are all items I am constantly using as the starting point for a lot of my outfits. Each can easily be styled in an array of ways with different combinations of clothes and accessories.

Stick With Neutrals

In addition to wardrobe basics, you may want to take it a step further by sticking to neutral colors. If you invested in simple silhouettes like a tank top but opt for a bright orange color, chances of you wearing it often are slim. Instead, choose shades of black, white, and nude so it makes each piece more versatile. This will allow you to have a lot more styling opportunities since they are much more adaptable in neutrals. Plus, no one will ever know you’re wearing the same piece.

Buy Pieces You Can Wear Year Round

My next tip to simplify your wardrobe is to be thoughtful about your purchases – meaning you can wear them throughout the year. The last thing you want to do is to buy into a fleeting trend or invest in an item you end up only wearing for one season. Frankly, all of this leads to wasted dollars and unnecessary clutter. Clothing that lasts year-round includes button-up tops, lace bra and camisoles, lightweight cardigans, and form-fitting denim.

Use Accessories To Make A Statement

Simplifying one’s wardrobe doesn’t mean wearing bland outfits that lack style and creativity. This is where your accessories come into play. Using these wardrobe basics as the foundation for an outfit makes adding statement accessories so much fun! Adding interest with a new hat, handbag, oversized sunglasses, or hairpin makes an iconic outfit go a long way.

Invest In Designer Classics

My last recommendation would be to invest in designer classics when you can, especially for shoes and handbags. Although it’s tempting to only buy garments simply because they’re on sale, oftentimes, the quality of the stitching, fabric, and fit are flawed, so you really can’t make great use of them. Just one or two high-quality pieces that you can wear year round will instantly elevate your outfits and make them seem that much more expensive. And since they last forever, you can really achieve a simplified wardrobe over the long haul.
