How to Style a Crop Top Without Showing Too Much Skin

The return of summer means the recycling of my favorite warm weather pieces – one of them being the crop top! These shorter tops that bare the midriff were extremely popular in the 90’s and have found their way back into our closets. Crop tops often seem daunting to wear because of their intimidating shorter length. However, there are so many different ways and combinations to style the crop top so everyone looks and feels their best. Not only that, but they are actually so versatile and make for a fresh summer look. Although I often bring out crop tops during the months of June and July, I’m always careful not to reveal too much. I hope the following outfit combinations will inspire you to bust out your crop tops this season.

High-Waisted Jeans
One of my go-to ways to style any sort of crop top is paired with a classic pair of high-waisted jeans. These two go together so well because the short hem of the top is balanced by the rise of the jeans so you never feel too exposed. Another way to create balance is is to look for crop tops that aren’t too form fitting. Looser tanks or balloon sleeves give the look more texture and interest, while still maintaining that summer vibe.

Paired with a Skirt
Another way to have fun with your crop tops this season is to pair it your favorite one with a skirt. You might prefer to keep it classic and opt for a top and a denim mini skirt. But this outfit combo also works with trendier options too. Think romantic lace crop tops with a ruffled hem skirt or an off-the-shoulder shirt paired with a tropical maxi skirt. The best thing to do is to experiment with different colors and patterns to see what looks best!

Layer Under a Jacket
One of the easiest ways to tone down a crop top is to cover it up with your go-to summer outwear. For me, that’s usually a denim jacket or blazer during the day – or a leather moto jacket at night. It works with a variety of bottoms and can also be peeled off and layered over the shoulders if it gets too hot.

Layer Over a Tee
Sometimes you have a cute crop top but you don’t necessarily feel like actually wearing a crop top. In that case, you can layer it up with other tops in your wardrobe. Try pairing a tighter fitting baby doll tee or tank underneath a cropped bustier. You can also slip on a cropped cami over a button down shirt for a chic, street style ensemble – or pair a t-shirt under an itty bitty tie-front crop top for something more feminine.

Cut-Off Shorts
Another easy way to style your crop tops this season is with some cut-off shorts. Denim provides that casual, all American vibe that never fails to look good in the summer. I love wearing some of my more dainty, feminine crop tops with details such as balloon sleeves or lace with denim cut-offs. The two end up balancing each other out so you look put together, but not overly dressy.

Wide Legged Pants
Finally, you can pair fitted crop tops with sleek, wide-leg pants. Whether you are more a flared denim girl or more into linen bottoms, these options work so well with a shorter length top. The streamlined crop top lives cohesively with the more voluminous, textured bottom half.
