As much as I love designer bags, I try my best to be strategic about what I buy. You guys know I always make a list of the pieces I want most at the beginning of every year or season, and handbags usually sit at the top of my list. In my experience, designer handbags tend to last the longest, retain their value well, and I always get the most wear from them. It’s sometimes tricky to tell whether or not a bag is a just a fad or a classic staple, so I tend to look for a few key features – it must be versatile, elegant, and recognizable. And I prefer bags that have a modern and clean yet classic design. If you’re looking for your next designer bag in 2020, I’m sharing my top picks below. As I know it isn’t always the most practical to buy designer handbags brand new, I also linked several used options in great shape from The Real Real and eBay below.
Max Mara Teddy Bear Coat (better for budget here and here) | Tularosa Sweater (wearing an XS) | Lovers & Friends Denim (wearing a 23) | Louis Vuitton Multi-Pochette Accessories | Alexander Wang Booties (exact sold out, similar here) | Tom Ford Sunglasses (exact sold out, better for budget here)
My obsession with Louis Vuitton just doesn’t seem to stop. The Multi Pochette bag got on my radar early last year and I finally caved into it before the year ended. Even though it’s now crossed off my list, I wanted to share that this is such a unique and investment-worthy piece. You get a combination of a pochette, a mini pochette and a coin purse all in one. The thicker logo strap makes it so easy to carry and it works with a variety of dressier and casual outfits.
One bag style I’ve yet to add to my collection is the belt bag. Although so many amazing styles released in the past few years, I hadn’t really found the one for me. Lately, I’ve been gravitating towards the LV Bumbag – I’m loving the larger size that seems more functional for everyday. And I also love that this one can be worn across the shoulders.
Janessa Leone Fedora (similar here, better for budget here) | CamiNYC Lace Top (size down) | CamiNYC Lace Cami (size down) | H&M Tan Coat (similar here) | Similar White Jeans | Christian Louboutin Heels | Louis Vuitton Neverfull GM
It’s been a while since I purchased a new tote bag. My go-to’s have always been the Louis Vuitton Neverfulls (see my full review here); however, this one feels really fresh with the fun print and varying sizes of the Monogram motif. It’s not only super spacious, but so practical to carry from the office to the weekend.
The Dior Book Tote is a bag that seems to be trending lately and it’s definitely growing on me. It’s available in a wide range of colors and fabrics, but I’m loving the burgundy one. I appreciate the spacious size and sturdy rectangle bottom that helps maintain its shape. I can see it being used as a carry-on bag or even a beach bag because it fits so much.
Topshop Biker Jacket (sold out, similar here) | Free People Sweater (wearing an XS) | Blank Denim Faux Leather Pants (wearing a 24) | Louis Vuitton Palm Springs Mini (available in my shop) | Saint Laurent Sunglasses (better for budget here) | Chanel Combat Boots (better for budget here)
The Dior Saddle bag was a favorite among influencers, celebrities, and stylists throughout 2019 – and the trend will likely continue through 2020. I think the iconic, recognizable shape of this one makes it worthy of picking up. I’d recommend grabbing this longer shoulder strap so you can wear it as a crossbody bag too!
Another fanny pack I’ve been eyeing lately is the Gucci Small Canvas belt bag. This is definitely more of a casual bag that would go well with so many off-duty outfits. I love that it’s small enough to not get in your way but roomy enough for the essentials. It’d be perfect for traveling or running errands!
Louis Vuitton Shawl (also here) | Revolve Lovers + Friends Sweater Dress (wearing an XXS, better for budget here) | Christian Louboutin White Heels (better for budget here) | Givenchy Sunglasses (better for budget here) | Chanel Bag
The Chanel flap bag is one of my favorite designer pieces ever, so it’s no surprise that the mini flap is now on my wish list. I’m a fan of smaller bags because I love how they transition from day to night and instantly dress up an outfit. Although it’s technically a crossbody bag, you can also just carry it as a clutch.
I’ve been making great use of my Louis Vuitton Palm Spring backpack, and I’ve decided that it might be time to add another one to my collection. Nothing comes to mind other than the classic Chanel Gabrielle. I’m lucky enough to have a collection of different style bags and I love that this one looks the most different. It can also be carried in a variety of ways given the versatility of the chain straps.
White Equipment Sleeveless Top (wearing an XS) | Levi’s White Jeans (also here, wearing a 24) | Saint Laurent Rive Gauche Tote (better for budget here and here) | Saint Laurent Sunglasses (better for budget here and here) | Christian Louboutin White Heels (better for budget here)
I usually always have one summery designer bag on my wish list, and this year, its Saint Laurent’s Nolita bag. The classic shape and raffia construction is such a chic way to accessorize your vacation outfits. But, I can see it working well with everyday looks too (similar to the Rive Gauche Tote, a favorite from last summer). You can wear it cross-body or as a shoulder bag.
