I just shared my Gucci Marmont Mini handbag review, but also received tons of requests to review the Saint Laurent College handbag. This bag is definitely a great piece to own as we head into the fall season, so I wanted to go ahead and share my thoughts on it with August quickly approaching. I first purchased this handbag in the large size back in 2018, and loved it so much that I added the black medium-sized one to my collection last year. You guys know I tend to purchase multiple colors of a single item when I really love it – like the Bottega Veneta Pouch bag and the Gucci belt. I think that alone speaks volumes to how much I adore this bag.

The Saint Laurent College bag was my first investment from the brand, so it holds a special place in my heart. What really drew me to it was the chevron quilted leather, which looks really chic and timeless with the V form flap. The interlocking YSL logo embedded on the top with the flat chain strap adds an elegant yet edgy touch. The bag itself is made of 100% lambskin and grosgrain interior lining, which highlights its luxurious nature.

What Size is Best – Large or Medium?

One of the questions I get asked most with the Saint Laurent College bag relates to the size. My gray College Bag (pictured above) is the large size, and it measures approximately 12.5 in x 8 in x 3.35 in. The medium one (pictured below) measures 9.5 in x 6.7 in x 2.5 in. Both handbags contain three separate compartments inside, including a central zipper compartment and a slot pocket on the back so you can keep your items organized. Where they differ is the amount of things they hold.

I find that the Large College bag is the perfect work bag as it can tote around a variety of items, including a small laptop or tablet in addition to my daily essentials. The bag comes with a removable strap so you can carry it as a shoulder bag or as a top handle. Since it is bigger in size, I don’t often carry it casually every day – but it’s perfect when I need to pack a little more than usual.

The Medium College bag, on the other hand, is perfect for every day! Unlike the Large College bag, it features a longer removable strap so you can carry it as a crossbody bag – that’s always a bonus for me. On the inside, it comfortably holds a regular-sized wallet, iPhone Pro, keys, and much more. Despite being spacious, it doesn’t hold nearly as many things as the large one though. So, if space is a big deal for you, the larger one might be a better fit.

Does It Scratch Easily?

The College bag is made from textured lambskin, which is soft but is also known to be durable. Despite the suppleness of the leather, I’ve found it to be pretty resistant to creases and scratches. Some people have complained about the delicacy of the leather, but I haven’t had any issues. It’s important to note that this bag is also available in sheepskin, which is much softer than lambskin.

Color transfer could be possible on lighter colored bags, such as my gray one or the white one, although I haven’t personally experienced it. As I mentioned in my Gucci Marmont bag post, I recommend storing all designer handbags in their original dust bag or box when they’re not in use. You can also treat your bags with this leather protectant spray, but I recommend testing any treatment on a small part of your bag before going all out.

Is It Heavy?

As I mentioned, the leather itself is very soft and light making the handbag quite flexible. However, the chain strap and hardware are what gives the bag that heavier, luxurious feel. With the chain strap attached, I find that the bag is a little heavier, but won’t weigh you down. I’ve carried both the large and medium handbags for long periods of time and never found them to be uncomfortable.

Where to Buy It?

The Saint Laurent College bag is becoming harder to get a hold of, especially if you’re looking for a particular size and/or color combination. For instance, my gray one is no longer available. However, you can find other color options at SSENSE, Net-A-Porter, Farfetch, and MyTheresa. Limited colors and sizes are also in stock at Nordstrom and Saks Fifth Avenue. I would say your best bet is grabbing it on SSENSE since you might be able to catch it on sale, especially towards the end of the year. Farfetch probably has the largest variety of styles you can pick from right now.

Would I Buy It Again?

Absolutely! The Saint Laurent College bag is definitely a versatile piece to own, especially when you think about all the different ways you can wear and carry it. The quality of the materials and craftsmanship that go into this bag make it a clear winner – I didn’t hesitate to buy it twice at retail price! If you’re in the market for an everyday bag, you definitely won’t be disappointed. Plus, it really elevates any outfit you’re wearing!
