That being said, coats are often an investment and can be expensive to buy. It’s a good idea to start thinking about which styles to update in your wardrobe before the weather takes a turn. Trench Coat

When it comes to outerwear, I always kick off the fall season with a trench. This jacket style has been around forever and comes in handy when you’re layering for warmth or when it’s drizzling outside. They’re great for daily wear, but I especially love them with boots or sneakers.

Denim Jacket

Although you can wear a denim jacket anytime of the year, I consider it a fall essential because it’s the ideal layering piece as summer comes to an end. You can throw it over anything from dresses to jumpsuits and leggings to mini skirts.

Camel Coat

A camel coat is definitely a staple because it will never go out of style. For the past year, I’ve been loving coatigans, which is a great way to introduce a camel coat into your early fall wardrobe. They’re light enough that you can start wearing them now.

Leather Jacket

A moto jacket is definitely one of the fall coats everyone needs. I always throw one on when I want an edgier vibe my look. This season, I’m loving neutral and gray leathers, which is a nice change from the usual black.

Tweed Jacket

A tweed jacket always makes me think of Chanel – I just love how sophisticated and feminine it comes off. It’s also incredibly versatile and can be worn to dress up a pair of jeans or with a pencil skirt for the office.

Wrap Coat

The wrap coat is one of the chicest outerwear styles you can own. The drapey effect is so classy and adds all the cozy vibes to any outfit. I also love that you can swap out the belt on these coats for a more structured one.

Cape/Poncho

I’ve always considered capes and ponchos to be really timeless, but they’re definitely trending this year. It’s such a great piece for fall because of how lightweight it is. I often use this piece to add different proportions and to play with volume in my outfits. The result is always so chic.

Structured Coat

A structured coat is the perfect day to night garment given its polished silhouette. It looks great layered over anything and you have plenty of options to shop from, including thicker plaid blazers and menswear-inspired coats.

Faux Fur or Shearling Coat

For that luxe factor, everyone needs a faux fur or shearling coat. Fall might seem early for this cozy texture, but as you guys know, I live in Minnesota. Fall weather here is cooler compared to other parts of the country. I find that these coats typically make the most sense in the mornings and evenings once we get into late September.

Puffer or Parka Coat

A puffer or parka coat might seem like overkill in the fall, but if you live in an area where temperatures can dip fast, then you definitely need one. I swear by my Canada Goose coat, but there are more affordable parks and puffers that I linked below. I’ll usually bring mine out during late fall and wear it through winter.
