5 Affordable Winter Essentials To Dress Up Or Down

Winter has to be the hardest season to dress for. It’s not only harder to stick to a budget with winter clothing being more expensive – but it’s also harder to look chic with all the bulky layers. Fortunately, dressing for the cold weather on a budget doesn’t require you to skimp on style. It’s all about buying pieces that do double duty and can be dressed up or down. Express is one of my favorite places to shop if you want to look chic while bundled up without spending a fortune. They have a versatile selection of casual yet polished pieces that you can wear to work, on the weekends, or for a night out. Here are the five winter essentials I swear by for a chic winter look anytime.
1. Tweed or Boucle Outerwear
During the colder seasons, I almost always start off my outfit by picking the right outerwear piece first. I’ve been loving tweed and boucle textures for a luxe finish. I was so surprised to find this boucle coat, which tones down the casual vibe of a puffer. The neutral color is also perfect for styling with other light neutrals for an understated yet on-trend look.
2. Layering Tops
Layering is key when it comes to pulling off a warm, stylish outfit. I love throwing fitted long-sleeve tops underneath hoodies and chunkier sweaters for extra warmth. If I’m wearing a cardigan, I’ll usually opt for a lace cami. The pairings are endless with light, layering basics.
3. Statement Sweaters
It’s been freezing in Minnesota so I’ve been living in sweaters and denim. I’m always talking about statement sweaters because they’re a super easy way to liven up a winter outfit. Express just released several new sweater styles that can go from day to night. From lace inset designs to fun ruffle finishes, they easily stand out on their own with denim or trousers.
4. Cardigans
I’m never without a cardigan in the winter. This belted duster piece is a wardrobe must-have because the tie belt can give an outfit more shape and make it feel instantly polished. It would be perfect over a slip dress for a date night, but also looks really chic with jeans or even leggings.
5. Distressed Jeans
My go-to winter outfit always involves a knit top and distressed skinny jeans. I love that this simple combination can be worn anywhere and it can be accessorized to fit any occasion. This pair that I’m wearing feels like second skin and the skinny ankle cut makes them super easy to style.
