The Winter Layering Tips & Tricks I Swear By

It’s just impossible to step outside without a few cozy layers on top since the weather gets so insanely cold here. If I’m being honest though, layers can be tricky to pull off especially when you’re wearing chunky knits and throwing on heavy coats. It’s so easy to feel weighed down and uninspired when picking out an outfit. Having dealt with Minnesota’s freezing temperatures for the past several years, I’ve honed in on some winter layering tips and tricks that help an outfit look more put together. I wanted to share them with you guys today since the cold weather won’t be going away anytime soon.

Accessorize with scarves

This is the perfect time of the year to experiment with layers. One of the easiest ways you can nail that “layered effect” is by draping an oversized scarf on top of your outfit. Whether you throw it over your shoulders or wrap it all the way around, a scarf adds dimension to an outfit especially if it’s in a different color or texture.

Pair a tailored coat with a hoodie

I love mixing different style aesthetics in the winter, especially tailored pieces with casual wear. It always results in a street style chic look that actually keeps me warm. You can recreate the look yourself by throwing a camel or wrap coat on top of a hoodie or sweatsuit. Just complete the outfit with a baseball cap.

Style a chunky sweater over a slip dress

Winter layering can work for dressier outfits too. One of my favorite combinations is a chunky sweater paired with a slip dress. The varying lengths help create visual interest along with the contrasting textures. This is a great way to maximize the dresses in your wardrobe for winter. You can finish off the look by adding another layer on top, like a winter coat.

Double up on your cardigans

Cardigans are all the rage this season and I’m sure you own plenty of them in your wardrobe. You can get the most mileage from your favorite cardi’s by layering them together. I love wearing a more fitted cardigan underneath a chunkier one.

Try a belted blazer on top of a knit dress

To create the perfect layered outfit for work, style a smart blazer on top of a knit dress then cinch it at the waist with your favorite belt. Keep your legs warm by opting for a pair of tights and drape a heavy winter coat on top if needed.

Wear a turtleneck top underneath a shacket

Shackets are one of my favorite trends of the season. They just look so effortless and cool with leggings or faux leather pants. I’ve been styling mine with turtleneck tops and I just love the look of a higher neckline peeking out from underneath.
