6 Ways to Look More Expensive on a Budget

Fall is my favorite season for fashion because it’s the easiest month to look expensive no matter where you’re shopping. One fall collection that’s already caught my attention is Express. With an abundance of layers, exquisite coats, and boots available, you can create various outfit combinations that look expensive and put together all the time. I’m in complete awe of the smart silhouettes and fall-ready fabrics – they add that high end touch without the designer price. It’s definitely the place to start your fall shopping if you want to look like a million bucks. Below, I’m sharing some of my favorite pieces and foolproof style tips to help you achieve that.
1. Layer on a tailored coat or jacket
Every season I always add a few coats and jackets to my collection. A timeless piece, like this wrap coat or a blazer, makes even the most basic pieces look expensive. I prefer light neutrals – and lucky for us, this beautiful Express coat comes in both ivory and camel so you can create various sophisticated looks. This season, I also can’t wait to experiment with luxe fall patterns like houndstooth and tweed.
2. Neutral colors are key
Sticking with neutrals has been a style hack I’ve sworn by for years! If you’ve been following me on Instagram, you probably notice that I often wear tonal outfits that range from beige to black and anything in between. It’s not just sleek and slimming but never fails to turn heads. I’ll often mix high-contrast textures to create depth and interest.
3. Stick to elevated fabrics
Speaking of textures, there are certain fabrics that just look more expensive than others. For instance, faux silk and satin as well as ribbed knits, suede and velvet. Express has so many stunning satin pieces this season that come without an insane price tag. I’m especially loving this slip dress because it’s fit for any autumn event. You can pop on a turtleneck sweater for the office or style it with heels for a fall wedding. There’s good reason why it’s been favorited for decades now.
4. Opt for heels
When in doubt, slip into a pair of heels. I wear heels with almost everything, including denim shorts, because they have the ability to elevate any outfit to new heights. Whether you prefer a pair of pumps, trendy sandals, or boots, the right pair will scream luxury. These Express tie-ankle sandals look designer – but they’re under $70!
5. Accessorize minimally
I’m a big believer that looking expensive also translates into accessorizing minimally. All you need is a gold chain necklace or a pair of studs to add just enough sparkle. Piling on too much ends up looking gaudy and cheap. I love Express’ gold jewelry collection because it’s so classic but also touches on the chunky jewelry trend.
6. Know your proportions
Most of you know that I’m petite, which makes getting a dressed a challenge on its own. However, one thing I’ve learned that you can do to dress better is learn your proportions. When everything fits your body well, you’ll look instantly luxe. One of my favorite fall pairings for perfect proportions are an ankle cropped pant with a body contour top and long cardigan. I also love cropped or oversized tops with high-waisted leggings or jeans, which look good with any jacket.
