My Max Mara Teddy Bear Coat Review

fashion blogger wearing a chanel bag for fallAs we head into the colder months, I wanted to review the single best designer piece in my fall and winter wardrobe: the Max Mara Teddy Bear Coat. With its lofty cocoon shape, natural fibers and toasty pockets, it feels a like blanket in the thick of winter – definitely the coziest coat I’ve ever worn. Max Mara debuted the coat in 2013 and it was an instant hit. Eight years later, it’s still coveted for its warm, plush feel and ability to transform any outfit. I had the Teddy Bear Coat on my wish list forever but didn’t snatch it up until two years ago. Its since become a fixture in my cold weather looks. Although it seems early to be reviewing such a piece, this one always sells out before winter arrives. I wanted to cover it while retailers had it in stock.

Keep scrolling for my honest review of the Max Mara Teddy Bear Coat and my answers to the most frequently asked questions…

Is It Worth It?

It’s certainly hard to justify a coat that’s over $3,000, which is why it sat on my wish list for so long. But after putting it to use these past two years, I can say it’s justified! The Max Mara Teddy Bear Coat is made from pure camel hair woven with hints of silk, so it’s sumptuous to touch. The natural fibers don’t just keep you snug and warm but holds up incredibly well through repeat wear. That being said, the coat is probably overkill if you live in a city where it doesn’t get too cold (like in the south or California). If you live in colder climates, like the Midwest or even in NYC, you’ll get plenty of mileage from it. It’s definitely worth the splurge in my opinion.

How Does Sizing Run?

The Max Mara Teddy Bear Coat is meant to be oversized. When I purchased my coat, it was only available in sizes S-L. This year, the coat is available in an XS, which would probably be ideal for my height and size. For reference, I’m 5’2 and typically wear XXS-XS in most brands.

Where To Buy It?

The coat is currently stocked at most luxury retailers in all sizes. Given the high price tag, I would recommend buying only from trusted shops with a flexible return policy, including Net-A-Porter, MyTheresa, Neiman Marcus, Nordstrom, and Matches Fashion.

If you’re looking for a great deal, this coat is available at Cettire for under $2,500 – a complete steal! You can also get 15% off at Matches Fashion (if it’s your first purchase, use code NEW15) or earn up to a $600 gift card at Neiman Marcus.

Would You Buy It Again?

Without a doubt, I would buy the Max Mara Teddy Bear Coat again. I have never been cold wearing it and I honestly can’t say that about many of the coats in my wardrobe. It’s been the best investment for the winter season and I can see myself wearing it for years down the road. I layer it over everything from dresses to leather pants to athleisure wear. I’ve even taken it with me on vacation – it always makes me feel pulled together.

Any Dupes You Recommend?

The “teddy coat” has exploded in popularity since Max Mara’s debut. Almost every high street store has their own affordable version from ASOS to H&M and Mango to Topshop. While none can compare to the original, they’re worth checking out if you want the look for less. I linked some options below that are good starting points and will run you anywhere from under $100 to $350.
