Your Guide to the Best Fall Sweaters

With so many great sales happening this week at Shopbop, Intermix and Bloomingdale’s, I thought it was the perfect opportunity to share my fall sweater guide! The beauty of sweater weather is that there is no shortage of styles to wear from turtlenecks to cardigans and beyond. You can rotate the same one between jeans, leggings or faux leather pants and your outfit will look entirely new. Ahead, I’ve pulled together several options that work as great basics or cool statement pieces depending on how you style them.
Goodnight Macaroon Sweater | Joe’s Jeans Camel Coated Jeans | Fendi Tote Bag
First up is the classic turtleneck sweater. There are so many variations ranging from more classic, fitted tops to chunkier knits. I live for them for them all! Neutral colors make great investment pieces since you’ll be able to wear them year after year. However, every wardrobe needs a turtleneck in an autumnal hue too! Either option is endlessly chic with the right jeans.
Free People Thermal Off-The-Shoulder Top (also here) | L’Agence Camel Coated Jeans | Fendi Tote Bag | Bottega Veneta Sunglasses
Off-the-shoulder sweaters will always have a place in my closet – but unlike previous seasons, I’m gravitating more towards one-shoulder pieces these days. I find that they lend any outfit a more contemporary vibe. You can team them with a pair of coated jeans for a polished daytime look or dress them up for a night out with flowy trousers.
INTERMIX Cardigan | Mother Jeans | Bottega Veneta The Pouch Bag | Karen Walker Sunglasses
Now’s the time to trade your long, drapey cardigan for a cropped style. It’s one of those key pieces that can take you from the office to the weekend in a pinch. Layer it on top of a camisole when you’re off to work or wear it buttoned up for a laidback vibe.
Mango Camel Coatigan | Amazon Green Tunic Sweater | Lack of Color Green Hat | Stuart Weitzman Over-The-Knee Boots (better for budget here) | Louis Vuitton Toiletry Pouch 26
A tunic sweater is one style I’ll never quit. The versatility of wearing it as a top or a dress is too convenient to give up. This Free People one from my closet has gotten so much mileage, the cost per wear must be pennies at this point. I also just discovered this Amazon one that comes so close to it!
Goodnight Macaroon Cardigan Coat | Nordstrom White Tee | Joe’s Jeans Camel Coated Jeans | Golden Goose Sneakers | Louis Vuitton Toiletry Pouch 26
If your top priority in the realm of fashion is comfort, then you definitely need the coatigan. Think of it as a cozy sweater with the structure of a coat. The soft knit fabric makes it that much more wearable for any occasion.
Bardot One Shoulder Sweater | Agolde 90’s Faux Leather Denim Pants | Balenciaga Hourglass Bag (size XS) | Schutz PVC Strap Heels | Saint Laurent Sunglasses
I’m so obsessed with the cutout fashion trend and love that it’s trickled over into fall sweaters. The slightest bit of skin that gets revealed via this small detail is so sexy yet understated – definitely made for the modern woman.
Free Assembly Henley Sweater | Free Assembly 90’s Straight Leg Jeans
Finally, there’s the ubiquitous half-zip pullover. Other variations include the henley sweater and knitted polo – all of which I love! They’re casual yet cool and look especially chic dressed down with sweatpants or yoga pants.
