Save vs Splurge: Winter Trends I’m Crushing On

It’s safe to say that many of us get outfit inspiration from Instagram these days. And when you’re randomly scrolling through the feed, you’ll likely come across multiple trendy outfits that pique your interest. This makes it easy to fall into the trap of buying things you don’t need or over-spending on pieces you should have saved on. I used to do this all the time but have gotten better about shopping more intentionally. That said, I wanted to put together this guide on the winter trends are worth splurging and saving on since I know we’re approaching that time of the year when getting dress can feel less than inspiring.
Where I Splurge…
Moncler Cape | Commando Turtleneck Bodysuit | Commando Patent Leather Leggings | Moon Boots | Chanel 19 Shearling Bag (better for budget here) | Saint Laurent Sunglasses | Moncler Beanie
Winter Coats (also a save)
You’ll never regret splurging on a winter coat that actually keeps you warm and insulated! I rounded up several below that checks all the boxes – toasty, stylish, and constructed of luxe, high-quality materials. While expensive, the benefits definitely outweigh the cost. If I was building my wardrobe from scratch, I’d probably go with a strong puffer and a luxe camel coat.
Perfect Moment Ski Suit (better for budget here) | Naked Wardrobe Ski Layer | Fendi Ski Goggles (better for budget here) | Moncler Pom Pom Beanie | Moon Boots
Ski Wear
Ski wear is here to stay, especially if you live in my part of the world. Although a high-performance ski suit isn’t entirely necessary, it’s nice to have if you enjoy winter getaways. And if not, an apres-ski chic sweater made from wool or cashmere is something you can wear on and off vacation.
Revolve Knit Jumpsuit (similar here and here) | Similar Chanel Combat Boots | Chanel 19 Shearling Bag (better for budget here) | Chanel Sunglasses | Kyi Kyi Pom Pom Beanie
Textured Handbags
I mentioned textured handbags in my fall round up, but I’m definitely still here for them this winter. Quilted leather, shearling and suede give me all the winter vibes. However, I’ve also been into tweed and boucle textures for a cool, upscale contrast.
Karen Millen Plaid Sweater | Karen Millen Skinny Pants | Paris Texas Knee-High Boots | Chanel Red Handbag
Knee-High Boots
I’ve never been one to splurge on basic knee-high boots, especially since you can find so many great high-street alternatives. However, when I finally caved into these Paris Texas boots, I was completely blown away. The supple leather and comfort are unparalleled. You also can’t beat the structured design – I’ve seriously never worn anything like it and I know it’ll last for years to come.
Where I Save…
BP Oversized Puffer Jacket (wearing an XS) | Naked Wardrobe Turtleneck Jumpsuit (wearing an XS) | Nike Daybreak Sneakers | Similar Saint Laurent Boucle Handbag | Kyi Kyi Pom Pom Beanie
Winter Coats (also a splurge)
The beauty of winter coats is that you really only need one or two functional coats. After that, it’s more economical to shift to affordable styles that allow you to test drive the hottest trends. My favorites run the gamut from menswear-inspired houndstooth coats to classic camel coats to quilted designs.
Abercrombie Shearling Jacket (also love this one) | Abercrombie White Turtleneck Top | Abercrombie Faux Leather Pants | Saint Laurent Sunglasses | Bottega Veneta The Pouch Bag (in Mist)
Faux Shearling Jackets
I just covered winter coats, but shearling jackets truly deserve a category of their own. Equal parts edgy and cozy, you can wear them with just about everything! Lately, I can’t get enough of cropped styles and plush shackets.
SAM. Red Puffer Jacket | Revolve Cutout Knit Top | Topshop Jeans | Moncler Beanie | Chanel 19 Shearling Bag (better for budget here) | Celine Sunglasses
Cutout Knits
Cutout knitwear has been on my must-have list for the past year and it just keeps getting better and better – even making its way into sweater dresses. This trend speaks for itself, so if you’re ready to dive in, check out my round up below. Everything is under $150!
Moncler Cape | Commando Turtleneck Bodysuit | Commando Patent Leather Leggings | Moon Boots | Chanel 19 Shearling Bag (better for budget here) | Saint Laurent Sunglasses | Moncler Beanie
Snow Boots
You guys know I do splurge on winter gear, but when it comes to snow boots, you really don’t need to break the bank. My favorite Moon Boots are under $200 and they’re the best thing money can buy when snow is your concern. There are more practical, stylish options from Ugg, Sorel and Marc Fisher – all of which I’ve linked right here.
