It’s finally starting to feel like summer – and one of my favorite ways to kick off the season is to ensure my wardrobe is chock full of key staples. I have raved many times before about how life changing it can be to implement a capsule wardrobe system. Not only does it make getting dressed a piece of cake, but it even saves you money in the long run. Although I tend to stick to classic pieces, I’ll often look for trendy details that can spice things up whether that’s a split hem on a pair of pants or some corset detailing on a bodysuit. If you are interested in starting your own summer capsule wardrobe, I’ll be sharing my ultimate summer check list below. The best part? Everything is under $100!
Karen Millen Boucle Jacket | Karen Millen Ribbed Tank Top | Karen Millen Wrap Skirt | Bottega Veneta Aviator Sunglasses (better for budget here) | Bottega Veneta Jodie Mini Bag
1. High-Neck Tank Top
One of my must-have basics for the summer season is a basic tank top. To shake things up, opt for a more elevated version of this age-old piece – like the high-neck cut. The effect is a contemporary style tank top that will pair well with any other item in your closet or on this list.
Topshop Button-Down Shirt | Open Edit Chain Strap Heels | Chloe Woody Tote (large size) | Abercrombie White Skirt | Saint Laurent Sunglasses (better for budget here)
2. Oversized Button Up Shirt
Without a doubt, the oversized shirt is the number one item that transcends all seasons. It always comes in handy no matter what time of the year we’re in. For the summer, I’m putting a huge emphasis on the oversized silhouette because it actually has more versatility. You can wear it alone, utilize it as a lightweight outer layer or even as a swimsuit coverup.
Saint Laurent Sunglasses (better for budget here) | Bottega Veneta Jodie Mini Bag | Kilo Brava Sweater Knit Cami | Vici Collection Paperbag Waist Shorts | Louis Vuitton Coussin PM Bag
3. Trouser Shorts
A pair of shorts is an absolute no-brainer when it comes to the summer heat. I prefer to stick to pieces look polished and put together, which explains why trouser shorts sit high on my summer 2022 capsule wardrobe list. These bottoms can easily be dressed up or down, allowing you to fully maximize their wear all season long.
L’Agence Tweed Jacket | Good American Bodysuit | Moussy Vintage Denim Shorts | Bottega Veneta Chain Cassette Bag | Bottega Veneta Aviator Sunglasses (better for budget here) | Alexandre Birman Tie Ankle Heels (also here)
4. Bodysuit
It’s no secret that basic tops are my secret weapon to looking effortless and chic. Bodysuits are my go-to when I want to achieve that seamless effect. They come in a variety of cuts and designs so you can get as creative or basic as you’d like with your styling.

5. White Jeans
There is something about white denim in the summer that just makes sense. I cannot imagine existing without a trusty pair of white jeans during this time. They’re endlessly refreshing while ensuring that your outfit pops.
Asos Knit Striped Dress | Asos Beaded Ankle Wrap Heels | Bottega Veneta Chain Cassette Bag | Bottega Veneta Aviator Sunglasses (better for budget here)
6. Knit Dress
I cannot stress how incredibly handy a knit dress is! What I appreciate most is that this slimming one-piece can be adjusted for a variety of occasions with just a switch of accessories. Aside from versatility, it’s one of the most comfortable dress styles you can own.
4th & Reckless Wide Leg Trousers (wearing an XS) | Pacsun Knit Bustier Crop Top (wearing an XS) | Open Edit Chain Strap Heels (run TTS) | Saint Laurent Canvas Tote | Rag & Bone Panama Hat
7. White Trousers
Every season has its own major “It” piece, and I personally have to give that title to white trousers this year. Fashion girls all over the world are loving flowy white pants. They’re wearing them in ultra feminine ways and experimenting with more androgynous combinations. There’s no shortage of inspiration for you.
Karen Millen White Blazer | Karen Millen Jersey Top | Karen Millen Leather Skirt | Bottega Veneta Chain Cassette Bag | Similar Christian Louboutin White Pumps (better for budget here) | Saint Laurent Sunglasses (better for budget here)
8. Neutral Blazer
Summer just wouldn’t be the same without having at least one neutral blazer in the mix. Time and time again, I am reminded of just how essential this outerwear piece is. Whether you prefer a menswear cut or a smart, nipped-in silhouette, you’ll find good use for this piece for years to come.
Abercrombie Cutout Knit Midi Dress | Express Tube Heeled Sandals | Louis Vuitton Toiletry Pouch 26
9. Strappy Sandals
A chic pair of strappy sandals is a surefire way to elevate any look for summer. As far as options go, you can choose to invest in a higher heel or an accommodating slide version. I always will recommend going with either white or black pair for ease of styling.
Free Assembly Slim Fit Blazer (wearing an XS) | Sofia Vergara Tie Peplum Tank Top (wearing an XS) | Sofia Vergara White Denim Cut-Off Shorts (wearing a 00) | Foster Grant Shield Sunglasses (under $10!) | No Boundaries White Sneakers | Scoop Straw Crossbody Bag
10. Natural Bag
To complete your summer capsule wardrobe, my last suggestion is to invest in a sturdy natural bag. A straw tote or canvas handbag is a summer must, and despite unpopular belief, can be worn in both coastal and city locations.
