The Best Winter Coats In My Wardrobe

Happy Monday! It’s finally New Year’s Eve and I hope you guys are excited about ringing in 2019! Today, I wanted to talk about the best winter coats in my wardrobe since I’m sure the majority of you will be going out tonight. Having lived in a city where temperatures drop below freezing – and most of the year is cold, I keep a rather large collection of outerwear in my wardrobe from large parkas to leather jackets. And since a great coat can elevate your outfit, I always like to have a few in rotation. However, I wanted to narrow it down to the most essential coats I cannot live without every season.
Parka
A great winter coat can live for years in your closet, so I don’t mind spending more when it comes to a heavyweight piece such as a parka. I’ve held onto my Woolrich and Canada Goose ones for a long time now and they withstand the cold each year. When there is snow in the forecast and I need to leave the house, you will almost always find me in one of these options. They’re heavily insulated with enough room for extra layers underneath.
Down Jacket
When I need to run out the door to walk the dogs or head to the gym, I am most likely reaching for a down puffer jacket. This is one of my favorite outerwear choices for more casual looks because it is so effortless and gives a bit of that street style vibe. But most importantly, it keeps me incredibly warm without feeling too bulky.
Shearling Moto Jacket
Coats lined with shearling are perfect for staying warm while also looking chic. It always does a superb job of keeping me protected during the cold winters here in Minnesota. I also love how they’re a casual option that looks just as great with a dress for a night out.
Faux Fur Coat
I love having a different winter coat for every occasion. So for dressier events, my go-to outerwear is a faux fur coat. It’s such a statement piece that truly ups the chic factor in even the most basic outfit. A solid colored faux fur coat can easily be mistaken for the real thing, making your outfit look more expensive than it actually is.
Wool Coat
If you’re often heading to the office or going to meetings, a timeless wool coat will be a great addition to your winter wardrobe. Here, you have the option of camel and wrap coats – two of the most classic styles. They do a pretty good job of keeping me warm especially when I have a chunky knit layered underneath.
Teddy Bear Coat
As far as trendy outerwear pieces go, this winter season I cannot get enough of teddy bear coats. (Read more on how to style them in this post here!) Teddy coats are incredibly soft and can be dressed up or down. I love layering this coat over a long sleeve top and some jeans for a quick and effortless look.
Trench Coat
On mild, windy or wet days, the trench coat is essential. The slightly dressier look is perfect for my style, so I throw it over anything that I want to give a sophisticated edge to. Plus, it’s the one style that’s versatile enough to go from the office to the weekend with ease. My favorite is this one by Burberry.
These are definitely the winter coats I can’t live without! As you can see, there is a mix of casual and dressier styles suitable for every occasion. What are your essential winter jackets?
