Fashion is such a personal choice that it makes it difficult to share what trends you absolutely need to buy into. I often share my favorites based on my style preferences and know that so many other bloggers do too. That said, I usually emphasize sticking to pieces with longevity or opting for trendy accessories, which can make basics feel fresh. Since I’ve been covering so many fall trends on the blog, I figured it was time to highlight the ones I’ll be passing on. Note that there’s no going wrong in the realm of fashion – but those with staying power will serve you best over the long run. Keep scrolling for my picks on what trends to skip and what to buy.
OUTFIT DETAILS (ABOVE): White House Black Market Tee | White House Black Market Coated Jeans | White House Black Market Necklace | Bottega Veneta Chain Cassette Shoulder Bag | Bottega Veneta Sunglasses | Alexandre Birman White Heels
Halogen Camel Coat (also love this one) | Treasure & Bond Cowl Neck Sweater | Commando Faux Leather Leggings. | Bottega Veneta The Pouch Bag | Gucci Princetown Mules (better for budget here)
Skip: Clogs
Buy: Loafers or Ballet Flats
I’ve seen so much coverage about clogs across all the major fashion publications lately. However, this is one trend I’ll be passing on. If you’re looking for a comfortable shoe alternative for the upcoming season, you’re better off with loafers or ballet flats.
Similar Puffer Jacket | Revolve Cutout Top | Mother Jeans | Chanel Red Handbag | NY Yankees Baseball Cap
Skip: Patchwork
Buy: Quilted Fabrics
Patchwork is becoming prevalent on coats, jackets and so much more – but it’s a trend that probably won’t last for more than two or three seasons. In my opinion, you’re better off diving into the quilted fashion trend. I have my eyes on diamond patterned quilts this year.
Express Belted Wrap Coat (wearing an XXS) | Amazon Brown Workout Set | Nike Daybreak Sneakers | Saint Laurent Sunglasses (similar here) | Louis Vuitton Neverfull Tote
Skip: Saturated & Neon Hues
Buy: Chocolate Brown
You can also expect to see tons of neon hues on clothing. Green, pink, and orange are especially popular. Although I love the occasional pop of red, I have a strong preference for chocolate brown. It’s so much more luxe and classic.
INTERMIX Off-The-Shoulder Sweater | INTERMIX Leather Leggings | Alexandre Birman Tie Ankle Sandals | Celine Sunglasses (exact style sold out, similar here and better for budget here) | Saint Laurent Sunset Bag
Skip: Stirrup Leggings
Buy: Split Hem Leggings or Unitards
Stirrup leggings were huge last year and I expect that they’ll trickle over into this upcoming fall and winter season too. I’m loving the more modern look of split hem leggings and unitards.
Express Plaid Blazer | Nordstrom White Tee | Joe’s Camel Coated Denim (wearing a 24 – size up) | | Fendi Tote Bag | Fendi Sunglasses | Christian Louboutin So Kate Pumps (similar here)
Skip: Micro Bags
Buy: Shopper Tote
I was recently asked if I thought that my Fendi tote was more of a trendy or classic piece. Though it probably leans on the trendy end, shopper totes will never go out of style and they’re super relevant right now. They’re the more practical, timeless alternative to micro bags.
White House Black Market Top | White House Black Market Gray Jeans | White House Black Market Leather Jacket | White House Black Market Pumps | Saint Laurent Sunglasses (similar here) | Givenchy Antigona Handbag
Skip: Bra Tops
Buy: Cutout Clothing
I love how all the fashion girls have been styling style bra tops and blazers on Instagram and on the street style scene. But, it’s not the most wearable look for me. Instead, I’m loving cutouts on dresses and tops. They’re the perfect day to night piece.
Similar Gray Coat | Revolve Gray Sweater Dress | Hermes Belt | Givenchy Antigona Handbag | Similar Croc-Effect Boots (better for budget here) | Saint Laurent Sunglasses
Skip: Skin Tight Boots
Buy: Structured Knee High Boots
I’ve also been seeing a lot of buzz around skin-tight boots for fall. However, as we saw with sock boots a few years back, they won’t last forever. Structured knee-high boots, on the other hand, are just now seeing a resurgence and will be in the spotlight for a while. They’re definitely more investment-worthy.
