Save Vs Splurge: Home Decor

The start of a new year often inspires me to refresh my home. After all, we’re talking about the space where you spend most of your time. Since I work from home, the last thing I want is for everything to feel cluttered and cumbersome. The best way to combat that is through chic home decor, which plays a huge part in creating the ideal ambiance. You’ll be surprised at how subtle changes, such as a switch of a light or area rug, can completely revamp an entire room and get your creativity flowing. If you’re ready to breathe new life into your home, I put together a guide of where I personally like to splurge versus save on decor.
Where I Splurge…
Furniture
As a long time homeowner, I’ve learned that splurging on high-quality furniture is worth every penny. When it comes to pieces you use on a daily basis, such as your dining table and sofa, durability will actually save you money in the long run. Cheap furniture won’t last entirely as long and you’ll need to replace them more often.
Lighting (also a save)
Believe it or not, lighting sets the mood and overall ambience of every room in the home. So, I’ll gladly invest a little more money into statement pieces, like chandeliers. I love how they have a big impact on the overall look and feel of a space. Brands like CB2 and Lulu & Georgia are known for being reliable, as well as beautiful.
Home Office Chairs
If you work from home you know how important it is to have a functional home office. But even more importantly is an office chair of high caliber. Spending hours on the computer can put a toll on the body so I cannot recommend splurging on a cozy home office chair enough. Not only can it promote better workflow, but your back will seriously thank you.
Statement Pieces
I also don’t mind investing more into statement decor. This boils down to things that draw the eye in. Think wall art, a coffee table, or even a sculpture. After all, it’s these statement pieces that will often add the most character to a room.
Where I Save…
Decorative Objects
Smaller decorative objects are where I prefer to save. Nowadays, you can buy incredibly chic finds from places like Target, Home Goods, Walmart, and Amazon. From decorative trays to candle holders to vases, these accent pieces are perfect for propping up on a console table or a shelf.
Faux Plants
Faux-plants are becoming more popular by the day – and I have to admit that brands are perfecting the faux plant. I’m a fan of long floral stems, faux olive and fiddle leaf fig trees. Whether you’re into smaller house plants or large trees, faux plants are a great way to make your home feel more zen.
Rugs
Many people tend to overlook the area rug. But when you think about it, this singular piece covers a large portion of a room. This means an area rug has the power to make or break a space. A textured, neutral rug can add a sense of serenity. However, for those who prefer to make a bold statement, opt for one with color or an avant garde pattern.
Lighting (also a splurge)
While I do splurge on lighting fixtures, I do save on table lamps and sconces. There are a variety of chic styles available that don’t have to break the bank. From mid-century modern style lights to more contemporary styles, affordable designs can quite literally brighten up a room.
