Save vs Splurge: Fall 2021 Trends To Buy Now

mia mia mine wearing a color block wool coat from karen millenI don’t know about you, but the start of a new season is always the hardest time for me to shop! With retailers dropping new merchandise daily, it’s so easy to get overwhelmed and think you need it all. I have a habit of picking up certain pieces early on, especially if I think it’s going to sell out. However, I’ll usually hold off on others until I can fully marinate on what I feel is most relevant for the season ahead. After careful examination of the biggest trends of the season, I thought this would be the perfect time to share the styles that I feel are worth splurging and saving on. Keep scrolling for my picks!

Where I Splurge…

Outerwear

Cooler temperatures are on the horizon and that calls for a heat-inducing, glamorous coat! While I love experimenting with trendier outerwear, I also know that a great coat will go far in your wardrobe. I consider trench coats, camel coats, and anything constructed of cashmere or wool forever pieces that you should splurge on.

90’s Denim (also a save)

There is a ton of newness in the denim world, but one style you should consider splurging on is 90’s jeans whether that’s a loose, baggy fit or straight-leg silhouette. I swear by premium denim because the fit and wash really can’t be beat, especially after you wash them. They just get better with wear. Luckily, you really only need 1-2 pairs. My go-to brand lately has been Agolde.

Boots (also a save)

With the myriad of boot trends raging on this fall, you should definitely be picky about where you’re going to invest versus save. I usually make this decision based on how often I’ll wear a shoe, whether or not I already own similar styles in my wardrobe, and if it’s something that transcends time. Some of those categories for me are combat boots (which I’ve worn through the past decade) and structured knee-high boots.

Textured Handbags

Handbags are a rare “save” category for me these days since they just can’t compare to designer bags in terms of durability and craftsmanship. The style I’m crushing on hard right now is textured bags. Think shearling, faux fur, tweed, and anything along those lines.

Where I Save…

Shackets

Fashion should be fun, which means buying into the hottest pieces of the season. One major trend I think fast fashion brands are doing particularly well right now is the shacket. You can find great styles at H&M, Mango, Abercrombie, Nordstrom and Shopbop for under $150, so there’s no need to splurge on this of-the-moment item.

Quilted Outerwear

Quilted outerwear is another trendy fall style that I don’t find particularly timeless. It definitely lends a cool, street style spin to a casual look so I wouldn’t blame you for wanting to try it. The good news is, there are plenty of affordable options to pick from, which I linked below.

Vests

This season, you can expect the resurgence of vests from blazers to knitted designs and more. I’ve seen this trend come and go throughout my blogging career. Although I love how it looks, it’s a “save” for me. Be prepared to layer them over sweater dresses, button-down tops, and basics.

90’s Denim (also a splurge)

I’ve been obsessed with the 90’s denim trend, but I can see that it might not be a splurge-worthy fit for you if you love classic style. In that case, you can snag the look for less from Levi’s and Abercrombie.

Boots (also a splurge)

Although I love my designer boots, I’ll often opt for more affordable pairs to wear through rough weather so I don’t have to worry about ruining them. I’ll often look to brands like Sam Edelman, Marc Fisher, Express, and Schutz for new season styles.

xo, Maria
